ABOUT THE NATION

Kapawe'no First Nation is located in Grouard, about 30 km North East of High Prairie, Alberta. The nation's six reserves comprise of 1562 hectares of land.

Kapawe’no First Nation has a very stable governance system that is based on the hereditary system. Former Chief Frank Halcrow became Chief of Kapawe'no First Nation in 1970 and served the Nation for 50 years before passing on January 2, 2020.

To ensure effective and accountable leadership, a governance plan was developed that clearly defines the mission, mandate and responsibilities of Kapawe’no First Nation and the Chief and Council.

Kapawe'no First Nation School is a brand new school offering Cree language instruction, land-based teaching, and Alberta Education's Program of Studies for kindergarten to Grade 12.
